Review of Pirate Jenny live show

from "Clubland" by Ken Maiuri)

Sunday night's Northampton Brewery double bill of Pirate Jenny and The Maggies was one of the strongest local shows so far this year. Though both bands have played the Brewery before, nothing could prepare the general public for the ferocious performances the two trios unleashed. Pirate Jenny rocked. Pure and simple. Its 11-song set started with a spirited "My Family" that found Aimee Swift and Amy Greene attacking their guitars and whirling around the slightly claustrophobic "stage area"; other highlights included "Sheila Shotglass" and "Conversation X," which gathers more chugging momentum with every six-string strum. The Maggies blew out the walls as well, playing most of their self-released (and highly recommended) "Experimental Cinema" and "Brittle" cassettes, including two of their very best neurotic pop songs, "My Gun is Loaded" and " Star on Wheels." Guitarist / Vocalist Philip Price sang his guts out, bassist Max Germer was all smiles and swinging hair, and drummer Stuart Wright exploded the songs left and right with a whip-crack snare. By night's end, the two bands were exhausted. So was the audience.
