BÄUMKER, WILHELM - Das katholische deutsche Kirchenlied in seinem Singweisen (German Catholic Hymn Melodies).

4 volumes. XLVIII and 2,372 pages. Reprint of the Freiburg edition, 1883-1911.

The work covers the Catholic hymns from the earliest times to the end of the 19th century and is based on manuscripts and printed sources. It was begun by K. S. Meister who published volume I in 1862 (later revised by Bäumker in 1886). Bäumker wrote volumes II and III; after his death, the fourth volume was completed from his notes by J. Gotzen.

The bibliography section in each volume (there are over 500 such pages altogether) has extensive descriptions of hymnals, and information on poets, composers and editors of hymn books. The melodies listed provide a survey of the history of the subject throughout the centuries. The prefatory remarks to individual hymnals are of exceptional significance.
