The complete collection of manuscripts as found in the Archives of the Moravian Music Foundation, Winston-Salem, N.C.
In four sections:
A. 493 manuscript scores of approximately 1,000
vocal-instrumental pieces (Congregation Music) (odes and
anthems); 5,779 pp. Works range from four to more than forty
pages in length. The average length is 12 pages. Settings are
variously for solo voice, mixed choral, keyboard continuo,
strings, winds, brass and percussion. Text is mostly German. Most
works are multi-sectional.
B. 45 manuscript scores and/or parts of large vocal works; 5,032 pp. This group differs from A section by the length of the individual works and also by the composers represented who are mostly non-Moravians: Quantz, Agricola, C.PE. Bach, Graun, Handel, Hasse, Haydn, Hiller, Jommelli, Mozart, Pergolesi, Reichardt, Turk, et al. The Moravians are represented by the large-scale works of Herbst, Latrobe, Rolle, Shulz, et al. The works are cantatas, oratorios, passions, scenes from operas, etc.
C. Four volumes of miscellaneous scores: keyboard works, mostly anonymous; song collections with keyboard accompaniment; book of chorales; 636 pp.
ADDENDA Book of Texts containing texts for the Congregation Music (Part A) in Herbst's hand (168 pp.). Book of Texts as transcribed in typescript for the Moravian Music Foundation by Ewald V. Nolte (229 pp.).
The collection contains the works of 58 composer, mostly Moravians and some baroque and classical masters.
