A restless and inventive composer, Schein, along with Hassler, Praetorius, Schütz and Scheidt, belongs in the forefront of early baroque German masters.

A baroque "modernist" he was one of the first to bring Italian monody and instrumental style to German music, to compose expressive adaptations of chorales for organ, and to introduce the poetic form of the madrigal to German music. His Opella nova is of great importance to the development of the chorale concertato in its transformation into the chorale cantata; in his Banchetto musicale he molded to perfection the variation suite of the early baroque.
