Edited successively by Carl Friedrich Whistling and A. Hofmeister.

Published variously by Anton Meysel, C.F. Whistling, and F. Hofmeister, Leipzig, 1817 to 1900.

Musical literature cited in this continuing series of catalogs is for the years 1815 to 1897.

The Handbuch is a "general systematic catalog of printed music and musical writings and illustrations" of the years from 1815 to 1940. This reprint covers up to the year 1897.

An extremely valuable reference work, the Handbuch was issued in three editions with component supplement issues. It underwent constant improvement and revision throughout its successive editions. It is a remarkable source of information about first editions, instrumentation, and arrangements of the music of a great many composers.

Publishers' advertisements and prices of new editions are also included. The thousands of publications cited throughout the editions cover instrumental ensemble music, music for piano and harpsichord and other keyboard instruments, all forms of vocal music, and myriad writings about music.

Included are alphabetical name indexes of both authors and publishers.
