Marpurg was an active writer on music theory and served as a public official in Berlin. His greatest work is the Abhandlung von der Fuge (Treatise on the Fugue) based "after the principles and examples of the best German and foreign masters." His Beyträge (Historical-Critical Essays on Music) contains critical reviews of writings on music, musical compositions, and comprehensive reproductions with accompanying criticism of foreign language publications on music history, lives of important musicians and information about music instruments. Kritische Briefe is a collection of published letters, which appeared on a weekly basis, addressed to important contemporary musicians with comments, some serious - some amusing, on music theory and the music life of the times.
