Complete Works. Edition of the Society of the Friends of Music, Vienna. Published at Leipzig by Breitkopf & Härtel, 1926-1928. In 26 volumes. Editors: Hans Gal (vols. 1-10), and Eusebius Mandyczewski (vols. 11-26).
Some of the features of the Brahms Edition, besides an unusual graphic clarity, include critical reports on sources, first performances, etc., and indexes to the songs. The Table of Contents to the entire edition is printed at the end of most of the volumes as an added convenience. It is important to note that few previously unpublished works of Brahms have been brought to light since this Edition.
Mandyczewski was a personal friend of Brahms and was archivist for the Society of Friends of Music. A highly-regarded editor and scholar, he worked on a number of critical editions including the Schubert Complete Works and the Haydn Edition.
This reprinting should make accessible to a greater number of people the lesser-known masterpieces - specifically, among the works for solo voice or chorus - of one of the great composers of all time. These are frequently overlooked in favor of Brahms's popular symphonic and chamber works, yet they are vital to the total understanding of the composer.
