Sisters In Service
What happens when DC teens require information relating to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases? They affiliate with Sisters-In-Service, a unique independent program that operates in southeast Washington.

Sisters in Service uses the “Long Overdue Values Education & Lessons on Intimacy to Everyone (LOVE & LIVE) approach to provide health related prevention, education, and service referrals for youth in Ward 8.

The primary focus involves discussing HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and helping youth come to grips with the dangers therein associated, using peer counseling.

Sisters In Service uses the “baby shower/tupperware” approach whereby youth developed materials are provided to young people by training counselors. Larger groups are also targeted.

According to Vanessa Rawls, director of UPO’s Office of Community Programs, Sisters In Service is slated to run through September 2000 and will touch an estimated 2000 youth.
