Few organizations can boast of a total commitment to senior citizens as much as the United Planning Organization. UPO was one of the earliest organizations to recognize the special needs of seniors quickly moving to fill those needs. Today, UPO operates a wide array of special activities for seniors including a legendary Weekend Nutrition program; a minor home repair activity; and a special transportation unit that not only brings meals to homebound seniors, but transports handicapped elderly to appointments.
UPO Weekend Nutrition Program
One of UPO's most recognized activities is the legendary Weekend
Nutrition Program for Senior Citizens that has operated in the
District of Columbia since 1973. The program not only provides
top quality nutritious meals, but seeks to actively involve seniors
in socialization activities as well - and all at no cost to seniors.
Special activities occur including fashions shows, trips to exotic
places, fashion shows, International Day, and an annual Summer
Fun Day among others. An average of 150 seniors attend each Saturday
and Sunday.

UPO Senior Citizens Minor Home
Repair
Because many seniors purchased
their homes in an earlier era, some of those homes are now in
need of repair, often emergency repair. UPO swings into action
with its renowned Senior Citizens Minor Home Repair program where
seniors can receive emergency repairs. Repairs/enhancements include:
door replacements; security door installation; porch roof repair;
step reduction/repair; facia board replacement; and replacement
of deteriorating floors. Other repairs include: kitchen faucet
repair/replacement; plumbing pipes repairs; hot water heater replacements;
drywall/plastering; window pane replacement; assistance with replacement
of furnaces; installation of wheelchair ramps; and others. These
repairs/enhancements are designed to make certain DC seniors remain
safe in their homes. Home modifications not only thwart break
ins but assist with energy conservation as well. Allocation amounts
up to $1000 per household (including a 4100 inspection fee) are
allocated for repair/replacement services.
