ASSEMBLY OF TURKISH AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS

What is ATAA?

The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA), a membership organization, unites the Turkish American community and friends of Turkey through 54 Turkish-American associations and individual members from the United States, Canada, and Turkey. The Republic of Turkey, a member of NATO and an ally of the United States, is of great geostrategic importance to the US. At the crossroads of East and West, Turkey is a secular democracy in a volatile region of the world. Recognizing the importance of enhanced US-Turkish relations to regional peace and security, ATAA works on creating a better understanding about the US-Turkish partnership and the potential and challenges Turkey faces, with programs directed at decision makers, opinion leaders and the general public. ATAA regularly disseminates information on Turkey and various aspects of US-Turkish relations to members of the US Congress, the administration, non-governmental organizations, and the general public. ATAA also leads community education programs to formulate and voice the Turkish-American community's positions on issues concerning Turkish-Americans. Founded in 1979 and located in Washington, DC, ATAA is a non-profit, tax exempt corporation.

Mission of ATAA

Increase awareness on the importance of the US-Turkish alliance and partnership in both countries. Increase communication between the Turkish-American population and friends of Turkey in the US. Promote Turkey through educational programs on the history, culture, political and economic structure of the country. Counter biased, defamatory or distorted information against Turkey and Turks in the media. ATAA sponsors an annual meeting which brings together experts on Turkey and the US-Turkish partnership, decision makers, scholars, policy makers, Turkish-Americans and friends of Turkey. ATAA sponsors teachers workshops to help better inform our educators about Turkey. ATAA offers leadership/grassroots workshops to increase awareness and participation by Turkish-Americans in public advocacy efforts. The Assembly offers seed money grants to organizations for educational and promotional projects on Turkey. ATAA leads delegations to confer with government officials and decision-makers in Turkey, and in third countries. The Assembly publishes a bi-weekly newspaper, the only Turkish-American newspaper published in the United States, The Turkish Times, as well as other publications. ATAA's central office works as an information clearinghouse on issues concerning Turkey and US-Turkish relations.
